IIDEA Supply Racing Car Development Parts to SHU Racing
Aircraft grade titanium and aluminium alloys used to manufacture critical suspension components for SHU Racing, the Sheffield Hallam University Student Racing Car Team
Having previously supplied a set of four hubs to the 2016 SHU Racing Team, it was an honour for IIDEA to be asked to sponsor the team again and supply a further set of hubs and additionally the suspension uprights for the 2017 season. The hubs this time around were produced in "aircraft grade" titanium grade 5 (6% aluminium - 4% vanadium) rather than the heavier alloy steel hubs for last season. The utilisation of titanium rather than steel gave an approximate 40% weight saving compared to the previous steel items.

IIDEA are based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) between Sheffield and Rotherham and only a few miles from SHU Racing's base at Sheffield Hallam University.
IIDEA manufactured a set of four hubs for the 2017 SHU Racing Car, two front and two rear. These were all manufactured from high-strength titanium alloy grade 5 commonly used in aircraft applications.
The hubs manufactured by IIDEA Limited for SHU Racing differed front and rear. The rear hubs had splines wire eroded to facilitate the fitting of the drive shaft splines. The front hubs were a simple bolt through design and were for us much simpler to produce.
The wire eroded drive splines can be seen in the centre of these hubs custom designed by the team at SHU Racing and manufactured on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham by precision engineering company IIDEA Limited
